Gilbert & Sullivan Synopsis
Sir Arthur Sullivan arrives in Heaven, guided by his care-taker and butler for eternity, Meadows. Everything has been prepared for, including an intimate gentleman’s club and his favorite music, mostly of his own works. However, Sullivan is shocked and dismayed to discover that the Powers that Be have placed W.S. Gilbert in the same room with him! How can two men who were never compatible artistically during their living years, possible endure eternity with each other?
Through conversation on topics such as the Victorian Age, British Colonialism, and their personal attitudes on women, love, sex and fame, the two men gradually discover a new respect and admiration for each other. To do this, they relive twenty-two of their most famous songs, with hilarious results. There is a great beauty and pathos in their work. These two giants of the Operetta world are much more than they seem. The show travels from Heaven, to Victorian London, to a tiny theatre on Jefferson Street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Gilbert and Sullivan experience their legacy. With numerous surprises along the way, their songs are performed, in some instances, in unusual combinations and arrangements, shedding new light on their material. As they learn to appreciate each other, hopefully, we will appreciate them in new ways.
All tickets are $35.50 before discounts
